Class 1 | The Art of Crafting a Song for Audition/Performance:

Basics of Voice - Do’s and Don’ts for Vocal Health

  • Discover what you are doing right and wrong for your vocal health.
  • Singing techniques to Discover correct techniques for vocal placement, focus, breath to successfully sing those high notes or master those difficult musical phrases.

Acting the Song

Learn the importance of discovering who is telling this story and more importantly: WHY this story needs to be told.

Working with an accompanist, Dennis will go over warm-ups and good vocal techniques for the singer. Each student will bring in a piece to perform for the class. Individually they will perform their piece and will be critiqued on their performance. Depending on the needs of each student, I will coach the individual with vocal techniques and acting exercises to improve the quality of the performances.

Class 2 | Telling a Character’s Story Through Movement and Dance:

In musical theater when we cannot express something with spoken words we sing, and when the song is not enough to express these feelings or tell that story, then … we dance.

In this class Dennis will discuss movement as it pertains to the development of the character and the story being told. Dennis will go through movement exercises adapting the movement for different character types (various ages, statures, etc.) You will discover how the very same movement can be adapted slightly for various character types.

After working character and movement exercises, the class will work together developing a choreographed dance that tells a story using specific character types. We will develop movement that is not dance for the sake of dancing, but tells a particular and specific story to the audience.
