Just You Wait! It’s Broadway Utica’s Countdown to Spamilton
Broadway Theatre League of Utica has officially started the countdown to the 2022 Broadway Series lineup with the hilarious premiere of Spamilton: An American Parody. Set to usher wit, humor, and a bit of pastiche into the Stanley Theatre, this dramatic dose of satire will showcase a million things Lin-Manuel Miranda hasn’t done –– but just you wait for the spoof!
Spamilton: An American Parody takes jabs at the award-winning Broadway musical Hamilton. Only, rather than following the life of our founding father Alexander Hamilton – an orphaned immigrant who rose from obscurity to the upper echelons of the newly formed American government – Spamilton tells the fictional story of how Pulitzer Prize-winning creator and star of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the revolutionary musical.
Delivered by a flawlessly versatile cast of eight who specialize in tossing out pop culture zingers cleverly accompanied by appropriately-theme hip-hop tunes played on the piano, Spamilton calls to Hamilton fans far and wide. Word-dense and as fast-moving as Miranda’s mind, this parody engages fans in delightfully wicked material and nimble lyrics that take on Broadway, society, and the rise and fall of fame.
While those obsessed with all things Miranda or Hamilton should “rise up” and purchase tickets for the special one-night-only premiere of Spamilton on January 27th, the show also holds space for those lost on the famed story of our Founding Fathers. Filled with bits on Wicked, Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, and Cats, this 75-minute musical will prove that no show is safe from the pen of funny-man Gerard Alessandrini.
Creator of ‘Forbidden Broadway,’ American playwright Alessandrini includes outrageous references to immortal shows like Gypsy, Chicago, The King And I, Assassins, Camelot, and Sweeney Todd throughout Spamilton. Blink and you might miss the bitingly clever jokes, like the lampoon of Liza Minnelli singing “Down With Rap,” and tributes to celebrities like Lady Gaga and Johnny Depp lobbying to appear in a “Hamilton” film.
Alessandri’s Spamilton has taken home several awards, including “Best Unique Theatrical Experience” by the Off-Broadway Theatre Alliance and “Show of the Year” by Manhattan Association of Cabarets. A great verve to a writer who’s used his 39 years of theatre puns to keep the swagger and nobility of Broadway alive – while rumored to have legendary genius Lin-Manuel Miranda laughing in his seat.
Carrying the full style, unrelenting energy, and emblematic choreography that is Broadway, Spamilton is an essential must-see for all theatre lovers, while filled with enough hilarity to entertain any musical newbie. Best yet, it puts the audience in the room ‘where it happens’ – a smart tribute in today’s galling times.
