2024-2025 In Season Show
London’s The Kingdom Choir Holiday Program Comes to Utica December 12
London’s The Kingdom Choir first attracted the world’s attention when they performed their show-stopping performance of Stand By Me in front of a world-wide television audience of overt wo billion at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May 2018. Since that infamous day the Choir’s infectious joy and spirit, matched only by their raw Gospel spiritual style, has taken them around the world including a debut North American tour in 2019 which took them to 29 cities including New York, Montreal, Toronto, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl.
Broadway Utica presents The Kingdom Choir at the Stanley Theatre, Utica on December 12 at 7:00pm. Tickets are ON SALE NOW and available at The Stanley box office (259 Genesee Street, Utica), by visiting BroadwayUtica.org, or by calling The Stanley box office at 315-724-4000. Group orders of 10 or more may be placed by calling Broadway Utica directly at 315-624-9444.
Founded in 1994 by award-winning conductor Karen Gibson, the choir draws from various Christian traditions and is dedicated to creating a sound that reflects the community they share through their warm energy and enthusiastic performances. The Choir’s recording of Stand By Me went straight to the top of the Billboard charts and they released a full-length recording on Sony Music. The Choir has performed and told their overnight success story through numerous media outlets including ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, NBC’s The Today Show (where they welcomed Hoda Kotb on her return from maternity leave), NPR’ s All Things Considered, The Kelly Clarkson Show, The New York Times and many more.
Karen Gibson, highly acclaimed choir conductor and workshop leader, is a powerhouse of inspiration and energy. Proclaimed “Britain’s Godmother of Gospel” by The Guardian, Karen’s experience is extensive. She has been involved with vocal groups and choirs for over 30years, conducting gospel workshops across the UK and Europe as well as Nigeria, Japan, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and the USA. She has been instrumental in drawing together and conducting some of the most prestigious large-scale choirs for a variety of gospel and community initiatives. Karen has also run workshops for aspiring gospel conductors in the UK, Poland, Norway and Italy.
Karen has been privileged to witness the joy of gospel via the many community gospel choirs she has worked with across England, including the choir she established in her own local community-Gospel on The Rise. Her passion for the genre has seen her delivering sessions in schools, teaching singing and training future leaders in the art of singing and leading gospel music.
The Kingdom Choir’s Holiday program will include soulful renditions of traditional gospel classics and popular contemporary music with their own inspirational versions of popular holiday music.

Hadestown is the most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season. In addition to the show’s eight Tony Awards®, it has been honored with four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical.
“Scorching! Stunning! Both unmistakably timely and irresistibly entertaining.”
Catey Sullivan, Chicago Sun-Times
The acclaimed new musical is by celebrated singer-songwriter and Tony Award® winner Anaïs Mitchell and developed with original director and Tony Award® winner Rachel Chavkin. Hadestown marks the first time in over a decade that a woman has been the solo author of a musical: writing the music, lyrics, and book, and is the fourth time in Broadway history a woman has accomplished this creative feat.
“Mesmerizing! Hadestown arrives in smoldering fashion. Unfurling like a dream, the show achieves a fluidity of musical theater storytelling that makes an old tale seem startlingly new.”
Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times
The show opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway (219 West 48th Street, New York) on April 17, 2019, where it played sold out houses nightly before performances were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hadestown resumed performances September 2, 2021 as one of the first musicals to reopen on Broadway where it continues to play today.
The show originated as Mitchell’s indie theater project that toured Vermont which she then turned into an acclaimed album. With Chavkin, her artistic collaborator, Hadestown has been transformed into a genre-defying new musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale.
Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.
Welcome to the intriguing and beautiful world of “your next musical theater obsession.”
Vogue
Hadestown electrified audiences with its 2016 world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop, which is the longest-running show in that celebrated theater’s 40-year history. The production then received its Canadian premiere at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017 and then a 2018 sold-out engagement at the London’s National Theatre. Hadestown was developed with funding from the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and was further developed by The Ground Floor at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Hadestown was co-conceived by Ben t. Matchstick.
The Grammy® winning Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording is now available at Hadestown.com/music. The album is produced by David Lai, Sickafoose, and Mitchell on Sing It Again Records.

I’ve participated in Broadway Utica’s Youth Ambassador Program for two seasons now, and it truly has been an incredible experience. As a high school student looking to major in music in college, the Youth Ambassador Program has taught me many valuable lessons and skills crucial to my future aspirations. Hearing about various career paths in the music and theater industry has significantly helped me figure out my own career goals.
During the pretalks before shows, I’ve met Broadway tour directors, actors, and even set technicians. Meeting these professionals has taught me that there are many different aspects and paths in the music and theater industry, something I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to learn about without this program.
One of my favorite parts of the program is how it incorporates local businesses involved in theater and music. The culture in the Utica area is rich with theater and music, and the Youth Ambassador Program has truly accentuated that. All the students in the program are very involved in the music and theater community, making it a great way to connect with some of the best young actors, dancers, and musicians in the area.
Of course, the shows and tours through Broadway Utica are absolutely amazing to watch, but I believe the best part of the Youth Ambassador Program is the connections it builds among students with a common interest in music and theater. The program has also given me the confidence to branch out towards new opportunities. This summer, I will be participating in Grammy Camp, a one-week music camp in Los Angeles, where I will meet and work with other music students from around the country. Without the Youth Ambassador Program, I would never have sought new opportunities like this or learned the importance of connecting with peers with similar interests.
Broadway Utica’s Youth Ambassador Program has been an important step toward my future and college plans and continues to be so. I will forever be grateful for the community and opportunities it has opened up to me. Most importantly, the program has taught me that no matter where the future takes me in music or theater, I will always have the Youth Ambassador Program to come back to, and I hope to contribute to the program someday. I can’t wait for another season with the Youth Ambassador Program and all the new people I’ll meet and the amazing shows I’ll see.
Applications are being accepted to join Broadway Utica’s Youth Ambassador Program today until August 1st. Go to Broadwayutica.org to download the application. With any questions, contact Kristen Matteson at kristen@broadwayutica.org or call 315-624-9444.
