Broadway Theatre League (BTL) today announced its 2013-14 season, which includes two tech shows, bringing as much as $3 million to Oneida County and the surrounding region. A tech shows marks the first time the cast, crew, and set for a Broadway touring production are together in one place. This requires the cast and crew of the show to be in Utica for several weeks creating a significant economic boost for local businesses– between $1.2 and $1.5 million for each tech show.

The two tech shows Broadway Theatre League has secured for its new season include We Will Rock You and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. These two shows will also make their United States premiers right here in Utica at the Stanley Theatre.

In addition to We Will Rock You and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, BTL has brought three other tech shows to Utica since September of 2011, Flashdance, American Idiot, and Young Frankenstein.

The complete 2013-14 Broadway Theatre League season lineup includes:

We Will Rock You, October 11 &12, 2013;
Memphis, January 21, 22, and 23, 2014;
The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, February 12 &13, 2014;
Peter and the Starcatcher, March 4 & 5, 2014;
Bring It On, The Musical, March 25 & 26, 2014; and
Million Dollar Quartet, June 10 & 11, 2014.

In addition to bringing a fabulous new season to its subscribers in 2013-14, Broadway Theatre League has created a new, more affordable seating section for single ticket buyers. The “Cloud Club” seating program is aimed at providing more affordable seating for interested patrons.  The lowest single-priced ticket for a Broadway Theatre League presentation in 2013-14 is $39.75. However, with the addition of “Cloud Club” seating, a patron can purchase a single seat in the last two rows of the theatre balcony for only $24.75 including all fees. This will allow a family of four to see a live BTL performance for less than $100.

“It is part of BTL’s mission to bring its shows to any and all members of the community that would like to attend,” said Executive Director of Broadway Theatre League John Fehlner. “Our new ‘Cloud Club’ seating program helps us reach a wider audience by creating a more affordable seating level,” he continued.

In an effort to continue to reach out to its younger audience, in 2013-14 BTL will expand its successful Youth Ambassador Program (YAP) introduced a year ago. This year, BTL enrolled 36 students from 24 area schools into the program.

“We believe we have met our goal this year engaging area teens and encouraging their interest in local theatre,” said Fehlner. “Therefore, next year, BTL will offer the program to students in 42 area schools, nearly doubling the size of the program,” he added.

BTL will again choose two students from each of the area school districts who will be given 2013-14 BTL season tickets.  In exchange for this subscription, students are required to post their thoughts about each show on Facebook and/or Twitter and submit a short critique of each show to BTL. Details on applying for YAP for the 2013-14 season will be made public in a few weeks.

The 2013/2014 National Tour of the new musical THE ADDAMS FAMILY, based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams, will make its Utica premiere February 12 & 13 at The Stanley Theatre. The show is a presentation of Broadway Theatre League of Utica.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY, which began performances in March 2010 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and ran through December 2011, immediately became one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune described the production as “classic, full-tilt, fast paced, old-fashioned musical comedy!” and John Simon of Bloomberg News called it “uproarious! A glitzy-gloomy musical entirely worthy of the macabre drawings by Charles Addams.”

THE ADDAMS FAMILY features a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The production is directed by Jerry Zaks with choreography by Sergio Trujillo.  Production design (sets and costumes) by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch with set adaptations by James Kronzer. The production features lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Craig Cassidy and puppetry by Basil Twist.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

In a prolific career spanning six decades, Charles Addams created several thousand cartoons, sketches and drawings, many of which were published in The New Yorker. But it was his creation of characters that came to be known as The Addams Family that brought Addams his greatest acclaim. With a unique style that combined the twisted, macabre and just plain weird with charm, wit and enchantment, Addams’ drawings have entertained millions worldwide and served as the inspiration for multiple television series and motion pictures.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY tour for North America is produced by Phoenix Entertainment, Stephen B. Kane and Michael McFadden, by special arrangement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide.  International productions have been announced for Brazil (March, 2012) and Australia (March, 2013) with others to be announced shortly.

Tickets to THE ADDAMS FAMILY are currently on sale and range from $36.50 – 61.50. For more information about the show, or to purchase tickets to a performance, call Broadway Theatre League of Utica at (315) 724-7196 or visit www.BroadwayUtica.com or www.tafontour.com

The tour of the smash hit Broadway revival of WEST SIDE STORY is coming to Utica.  WEST SIDE STORY will be at the Stanley Theatre on November 7 & 8 at 7:30 PM and is a presentation of the Broadway Theatre League of Utica. Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction is recreated for the tour by David Saint, the Associate Director on Broadway. The original Jerome Robbins choreography is reproduced by Tony Award-nominee Joey McKneely (The Boy from Oz, The Life).

WEST SIDE STORY tells the story of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as they struggle to rise above the hatred and intolerance that surrounds them. WEST SIDE STORY soars as the greatest love story of all time and remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Somewhere.”

The Associated Press says WEST SIDE STORY “remains Broadway’s best dance-driven musical. Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout.” Variety says, “The true stars of WEST SIDE STORY are Jerome Robbins’ graceful, endlessly expressive choreography and Leonard Bernstein’s score, which still sounds bracingly modern a half-century after it was first heard. The music is a primal force.”

WEST SIDE STORY is written by three theatrical luminaries: two-time Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents (book) and multiple Tony and Grammy Award winners Leonard Bernstein (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) in his Broadway debut.

WEST SIDE STORY features scenic designs by James Youmans, costumes by Tony Award nominee David C. Woolard, lighting by Tony Award winner Howell Binkley, and sound design by Peter McBoyle.

For more information about WEST SIDE STORY, or to purchase tickets to an upcoming show, call Broadway Theatre League of Utica at (315) 724-7196 or visit www.BroadwayUtica.com.
