Broadway Utica’s Bernadette A. Eichler Youth Ambassadors meet with cast members from Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville.

Lines grew down Genesee St. on Tuesday, October 15th with anticipation and excitement for the doors to open at the Stanley Theatre. Parrot heads, patrons and hundreds of people couldn’t wait to get to their seats and Escape to Margaritaville. While energy filled the lobby and mezzanine, upstairs inside the Romano Room of the theatre our Youth Ambassadors were sitting on the edge of their seats listening to cast members from Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville.

30+ Juniors and Seniors from local area high schools with a passion for not only the arts but the community met for a special one of a kind “Pre-Talk” before the show. Our very own students were honored to have met Tyler Whittaker and Victoria Price, both swings in the production.

It was a wonderful evening spent together before the show hearing about auditions, acting, life on the road, being involved and stepping outside the box.

Thank you Tyler and Victoria. Your passion for what you do each day is inspiring. Broadway Utica is thankful and honored to have had you share in this exclusive pre-talk forum with our ambassadors.

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever
changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to
speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer
Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring
production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of
seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and
hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our
lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.
The show received its world premiere off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on February 13,
1996 to ecstatic reviews and transferred to Broadway on April 29, 1996. RENT won the 1996 Tony Award
for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Based on original direction by Michael Greif (Tony and Drama Desk Nominations, RENT), Evan Ensign re-
stages the 20 th  anniversary tour. Original Broadway creatives Marlies Yearby (Choreography), Angela
Wendt (Costume Design), and Tim Weil (Music Supervision and Additional Arrangements) are joined by
Jonathan Spencer (Lighting Design), Keith Caggiano (Sound Design), MiRi Park (Associate
Choreographer), and Matthew E. Maraffi (adapting original scenic design by Paul Clay) to make up the
creative team for the tour. Casting for the tour is by Wojcik | Seay Casting.
The RENT 20th Anniversary Tour is produced by Work Light Productions whose other touring
productions include the 2016 Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar, Irving Berlin’s
White Christmas, Bandstand, and the upcoming tour of the TONY award winning musical Ain’t Too
Proud.

Broadway Utica host first Master Classes for Students on Broadway! Program

Broadway Utica kicks off it’s first event since reintroducing Students on Broadway! This one of a kind program is designed to expose the arts to children of all ages right here in the Mohawk Valley.

The event was held on Tuesday, July 16th at the Parish on Broadway with Dennis J. Clark. Several dozen students took place in our morning session with a vocal class learning the importance of discovering who is telling the story and why this story needs to be told. The afternoon class with Dennis discussed movement as it pertains to the development of the character and the story being told. Students discovered how the very same movement can be adapted slightly for various scenarios.

Dennis was born and raised in New Hartford, NY and graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a major in Music-Vocal Performance and Musical Theatre. He has performed, directed and choreographed all over the United States and is a proud member of Actors Equity and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Dennis has taught privately as well as at the Walnut Hill School and Stagedoor Manor. Currently, he is the Artistic Director of the Ritz Theatre in Sheffiled, AL.

Stay tuned for the next event for Students on Broadway!
