The Kingdom Choir: From the Royal Wedding to Global Stages—
A Journey of Faith, Music, and Unity

When The Kingdom Choir stepped onto the world stage at the Royal Wedding, they brought more than melodies—they delivered a message that would resonate across the globe. When their soul-stirring rendition of ‘Stand by Me’ soared through the air, the audience could feel the music wrapping around them, as if each note was a gesture of reassurance. This moment, witnessed by millions, wasn’t just a performance—it was a message of unity and hope that transcended borders and transformed them from a beloved South London gospel choir into an international sensation.

But their story didn’t begin beneath the royal spotlight. For years, The Kingdom Choir had been weaving their harmonies into the fabric of their community. Founded by Karen Gibson, a visionary with more than 30 years of experience in gospel music, the choir’s mission was simple yet profound: to bring people together through music. What began as small gatherings of passionate singers soon grew into a powerful movement of faith, resilience, and joy, inspiring not only their local community but spreading their message far and wide.

In May 2018, their rise reached unimaginable heights when their voices filled Windsor Castle and echoed through televisions worldwide. As they sang, the world paused to listen. The resonance of their harmonies—rich and full, with each note hanging in the air—became a vessel for hope and healing. Their performance, seen and felt by millions, placed The Kingdom Choir on the map as one of the most recognized gospel ensembles in the world. Appearances on Good Morning America, The Today Show, and The Kelly Clarkson Show followed, cementing their place on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.

At the heart of their success is Karen Gibson, whose vision and deep-rooted belief in gospel music’s power to unite people has guided the choir every step of the way. As conductor and mentor, she instills in every note a message that gospel is about joy, struggle, and triumph over adversity—a truth that resonates deeply with audiences, leaving a lasting sense of peace in the hearts of listeners.

Under Karen’s guidance, The Kingdom Choir has spread the transformative power of gospel music, blending traditional classics with contemporary hits. In intimate church settings, the warmth of their voices mingles with the scent of old wood and candle wax, while in grand concert halls, the crisp acoustics amplify every note, making each performance feel like a personal connection between the choir and their audience.

Since their Royal Wedding debut, The Kingdom Choir has graced stages at festivals, charity events, and iconic venues worldwide. Their music is not just sound; it’s a universal language of love, resilience, and unity, touching listeners deep in their souls.

Now, their remarkable path brings them to Utica, New York, through the Broadway Theatre League of Utica’s seasonal showcase. This performance is your opportunity to experience the global phenomenon that has captivated millions and to feel the transformative power of gospel music right here in our community. Join us as The Kingdom Choir fills the stage with their unforgettable voices, celebrating love, resilience, and the power of song. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable experience.

Broadway Utica Brings the Magic of Pinkalicious and Mister C to Hundreds of Young Students at Rome Capitol Theater

Broadway Utica opened the majestic doors of the Rome Capitol Theater to hundreds of young students across Oneida County, offering them an unforgettable introduction to the magic of live theater. For many, this was their first encounter with the enchantment of the stage, and through two extraordinary events, Broadway Utica planted seeds of imagination that will grow for years to come.

Pre-K through 2nd graders walked down the long aisles and into the velvet-chiseled seats, popcorn and water in hand, settling in as the theater transformed into a vibrant pink wonderland for Pinkalicious The Musical, based on the beloved children’s book by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann. As Pinkalicious’s world turned an enchanting shade of pink, the theater buzzed with delighted laughter. The vivid, pink-filled world captivated the young audience as they followed Pinkalicious on her journey of indulgence with too many pink cupcakes, only to find herself turned entirely pink.

Pinkalicious’s colorful adventure sparked conversations about choices, moderation, and how we balance our desires. As the curtain fell, the air buzzed with excitement, with students already eager to return for another dose of theatrical magic. “My 1st Graders loved Pinkalicious!” said Mrs. Asaro, 1st grade teacher at Albany Elementary School in Utica. “They were excited to see the show after we read a few of the books together! It was so fun to watch the students experience a live show, for some of them this was their first ever, the magic in their eyes was very memorable! The students were very excited to have popcorn and a drink as well.”

Just three days later, older elementary students returned to the theater for an entirely different kind of adventure—Mister C Live. Known for his Emmy-nominated Full STEAM Ahead program, Mister C turned the theater into an interactive science lab, inviting the young audience to become his “science crew” for a day of mind-blowing experiments. With infectious enthusiasm and humor, Mister C brought the wonders of science to life in a way that was both educational and thrilling.

From fizzing chemical reactions to DIY rocket launches, the students were mesmerized by each experiment. The entire theater was electric with excitement as small explosions lit up the stage, and colorful streamers shot into the air. Mister C’s performance wasn’t just a lesson—it was a high-energy celebration of curiosity and creativity. For many students, this was the first time science felt like pure magic—an exciting, hands-on adventure where anything was possible.

By the end of the show, each child had been sparked by a fire of curiosity, revealing that science isn’t just a subject—it’s an endless world of discovery that beckons with joy and possibility.

These two incredible events were part of UticaWorx, a powerful initiative from Broadway Utica that is redefining arts education in the region. UticaWorx is built on the belief that every child deserves to experience the magic of the arts, regardless of background. Through performances like Pinkalicious and Mister C Live, Broadway Utica isn’t just creating audiences; they are nurturing the next generation of artists, scientists, and dreamers who will shape our world.

For over 65 years, Broadway Utica has been a champion of arts education in the Mohawk Valley. As a non-profit organization, Broadway Utica relies on the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations to keep the arts alive in the community. Ticket sales alone cannot fund these life-changing programs, and it is through the vision and kindness of donors that initiatives like UticaWorx continue to thrive.

Supporting Broadway Utica goes beyond bringing performances to the stage—it’s an investment in young minds, creativity, and a world of endless possibilities. With the community’s support, they can ensure that every child has access to the arts and experiences to keep them dreaming big, thinking creatively, and discovering their passions.

Shelbie Rassler: Conducting “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” –
A Journey of Inspiration and Innovation

On November 17, a new kind of superhero will take the stage at The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater in Syracuse, NY. Shelbie Rassler, a young, trailblazing female conductor at the age of 26, will step up to the podium for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live in Concert. As the lights dim and her baton rises, Rassler will lead the orchestra through Daniel Pemberton’s electrifying score, blending the grandeur of symphonic music with the raw energy of hip-hop beats, complete with a live DJ scratching on turntables. With every precise, powerful motion, Rassler will invite audiences into the Spider-Verse, making this movie-turned-concert a breathtaking fusion of animation and sound.

But Rassler’s journey to this moment hasn’t come without its challenges. Growing up, there were few conductors who looked like her; the podium was a space often reserved for men. “I didn’t know if this was an opportunity open to women,” she reflects. Despite her doubts, Rassler pursued her dream with a fierce passion, carving out her own path to the podium. Earning her Bachelor’s in Music Composition from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and her Master’s from Juilliard under the guidance of Pulitzer Prize-winner John Corigliano, Rassler built a foundation in both technical skill and fearless creativity.

Now, as she stands before each audience, she makes it a point to look out, scanning the crowd for the young children watching her every move. “I want them to see me up here,” she says, “to know that anything is possible, that boundaries are meant to be pushed and perceptions changed.” Each note she conducts isn’t just part of a concert; it’s a reminder to the young dreamers in the audience that they, too, can aspire to roles once thought out of reach.

Conducting this Spider-Man concert is both a creative milestone and an opportunity to inspire. “Conducting means guiding both the orchestra and the audience on a journey together,” Rassler explains. “I want everyone to feel connected to the performance, immersed in each beat and crescendo.” Her preparation for the tour has been rigorous, ensuring each moment aligns perfectly with the action on screen. The symphonic sweeps and hip-hop rhythms create an atmosphere so immersive that, for just a moment, the theater transforms, and audiences feel as though they’re right beside Spider-Man, swinging through the cityscape.

This performance is a celebration not only of Spider-Man but of music’s power to unite. The orchestra is a diverse blend of musicians, each bringing their own unique perspective to the score. “Working with such a range of artists feels like painting with a full palette,” she says. “Every note is enriched by their experiences, and together we create a sound that’s vibrant, alive.” From rehearsals filled with camaraderie to the final crescendo on stage, Rassler builds a shared musical experience that flows from the orchestra to the audience and back, bridging stories and lives with every sound.

On November 17, audiences will see not only Spider-Man’s story unfold but also Rassler’s—a young conductor defying conventions and inspiring a new generation to dream beyond boundaries. Watching her lead the orchestra in perfect sync with the DJ and animated scenes, young girls and boys in the crowd will see that the impossible is within reach, whether it’s a movie that’s been transformed into a concert, or a young woman commanding the stage with all the confidence of a superhero herself.

As she raises her baton for that final bow, she’s inviting audiences to feel the magic of live music and imagination intertwined, to witness not just a performance but a vision—a world where dreams come alive and new possibilities rise with each powerful note.

Bridging Generations Through Theater: Introducing Broadway Utica’s “Full Circle, Seniors, Seniors & a Show”

At Broadway Utica, we believe that live theater has the power to connect people in unique and meaningful ways. That’s why we are thrilled to introduce our new intergenerational program, Full Circle, Seniors, Seniors & a Show. This initiative, made possible by a generous grant from The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, is designed to bring high school seniors and senior citizens together through the shared experience of live theater.

This innovative program offers an opportunity for local high school seniors and senior citizens to attend a Broadway Utica show at The Stanley Theatre, with the goal of fostering connections, sharing life stories, and enjoying the arts in a welcoming, inclusive environment. By pairing younger and older generations, we hope to create lasting bonds and inspire mutual appreciation between these two groups.

Danielle Padula, Director of Broadway Utica and the driving force behind this initiative, shares:
This program is about more than just attending a show. It’s about creating connections that bridge generations. We hope Full Circle will foster meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and moments that both participants will carry with them for years to come.

For high school seniors, Full Circle is a chance to engage in a cultural activity that broadens their perspective while learning valuable life lessons from their senior companions. Senior citizens, in turn, will have the opportunity to reconnect with the community, share their rich life experiences, and enjoy a day out with great company.

Participants will be carefully matched based on shared interests and availability. They’ll meet before the show for a casual get-together over coffee and dessert, getting to know one another before heading into the theater. After the show, both participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the performance, sharing their thoughts and experiences in a post-show discussion.

Participants must have their own transportation and be able to attend at least two of the following shows:

The Kingdom Choir on 12/12/2024
Dirty Dancing Live in Concert on 1/24/2025
Dear Evan Hansen on 4/8/2025

Space is limited, and we’re excited to welcome community members to join this unique program. If you’re a high school senior or a senior citizen who loves theater and wants to share this experience, we’d love to hear from you!

To sign up, email Danielle Padula at danielle@broadwayutica.org or call us at 315-624-4444. Let’s make this theater season one to remember, bringing generations together through the love of live performance.

Review: Hadestown Brings Down the House at The Stanley – Don’t Miss Tonight’s Encore in Utica!

Last night, Hadestown, presented by Broadway Theatre League of Utica, took The Stanley Theatre by storm, delivering an unforgettable performance that left seasoned theatergoers and first-timers in awe. But here’s the thing: even if you don’t know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, Hadestown will pull you in and never let go.

At its core, Hadestown is a modern, folk-jazz retelling of an ancient Greek myth. It’s the tale of Orpheus, a young dreamer with a voice so powerful it could move mountains, and Eurydice, a fierce and independent woman trying to survive in a harsh world. When Eurydice makes a desperate deal and is lured to the underworld by Hades, Orpheus must use his music to win her back—but there’s a catch, and it’s one that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

What makes Hadestown special isn’t just the story, though. It’s the way the show blends myth with modern-day themes. You’ll see reflections of today’s world in Hades’ oppressive underworld—a place that feels part industrial wasteland, part sleek corporate empire. Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld, brings some much-needed rebellion and flair as she tries to balance the weight of her husband’s rule and her own longing for freedom. And Orpheus? He represents hope and resilience in the face of impossible odds—something we can all relate to, even if we’re not chasing our loved ones out of the underworld.

The music, with its mix of jazz, blues, and folk, will sweep you up and carry you along for the ride. Even if you’ve never heard the songs before, by the time the final number hits, you’ll be humming along and feeling every emotion that comes with this timeless story of love, sacrifice, and hope.

Whether you’re familiar with Greek mythology or not, Hadestown speaks to universal themes of love, power, and perseverance. And the production itself? It’s a visual and auditory feast. The lighting, the set design, the ensemble cast—it all works together to create an experience that’s part concert, part theatrical wonder.

If you missed out last night, don’t make the same mistake twice. Hadestown is the kind of show that stays with you long after you’ve left the theater. So whether you’re a theater lover or just curious about what the buzz is all about, grab your ticket for its last night in Utica and take this unforgettable journey to the underworld. You won’t regret it!

Tickets still available by calling The Stanley Theatre at 315-724-4000, visiting their box office or online at www.BroadwayUtica.org
