YAP SPOTLIGHT: Lucy Johns

This past fall, my school had the opportunity to put on a cabaret – an event our drama club looks forward to every year. Not only is it a chance to showcase our talents, but it’s also when we finally learn what our spring musical will be. Since most schools in our area only put on one musical each year, this is one of our few chances to perform for a live audience.

For me—and so many others—there’s nothing quite like the feeling of performing. That’s why having just one opportunity to do so at school often feels like it’s not enough. The cabaret gives us an additional chance to take the stage, share our passion, and perform in our own auditorium with our peers. I love inviting teachers, classmates, and family members to come watch because it allows them to see a different side of me – outside of our spring production.

One of the best parts of the cabaret is getting to choose my own piece. I can pick something that highlights my vocal strengths, which helps me feel more confident on stage. It also allows me to bring something unique to the performance—something the audience will only hear from me, in a way that’s all my own.
Beyond the excitement of performing, the cabaret helps our drama club gain valuable experience. It prepares us for future opportunities, whether it’s our spring musical or other personal performance goals. And for those of us who live for the stage, it’s a moment we cherish—one more chance to do what we love.
